Hand-painted on glass
I was inspired by a beautiful Bulgarian Orthodox icon, The Virgin Eleousa (Greek word meaning “tenderness” or “showing mercy”). The term derives from the Greek word “eleos”, meaning mercy) from the early 17th Century, National Gallery, Sofia.
The artist of both Icon No. 6 and No. 12 which share the same subject is anonymous. I decided to paint both versions but – following the longstanding Romanian tradition – I used the old painting technique: painting on glass in reverse. The original icon was painted on wooden boards in tempera. My choice of painting with acrylic in reverse on glass was influenced by my admiration for traditional Romanian glass icons and the shared Byzantine influence in both countries Bulgaria and Romania.
As usual, I presented the original design, subject and colours, staying true to the essence while bringing a fresh perspective to a timeless artwork.
My aim was to honour the anonymous folk artist's style with my dedication and effort.
Please note that the wood used for frames and to protect the back of the glass is recycled Victorian floorboards finished with varnish and polished with beeswax for a long lasting finish.
