Hand-painted on wood

The three-handed Mother of God or The Mother of God Tricherousa (or Hodegetria) - the variations in name are characteristic of different schools of Orthodox iconography with Russian or Balkan influence Bulgaria/Serbia/Romania) but, irrespective of the name, this is a type of Orthodox Christian icon venerated and treasured in museums, churches or private collections.

According to tradition, this icon was associated with the miraculous healing of John of Damascus in the 8th century. The icon is a depiction of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, with a third hand shown on the lower right.

The style of this piece is similar to icons from the Cretan School of the 18th century or later.

The icon was designed and painted on the wooden panel with cross-bracing. The panel was prepared with gesso and painted with acrylic.

The attention to detail, the amount of time taken in painting and finishing this icon to make it as close as possible to the original, make this icon stand out from other similar artworks.

Usual finishing with varnish and polished with wax (making it an easy task to refresh all my wooden icons with a layer of good quality beeswax and buffing in the future)

Painted, dated and signed by Vlad in 2023
