Icon on wood
One of the most beautiful icons on wood, originally from Dečani monastery altar screen, Serbia in the former Yugoslavia. The monastery was decorated by paintings, including frescoes, for the Serbian King, late Emperor Dušan (1331-1335) so the original that inspired me was painted around 1350. The refined combination of purple, vermilion and gold with cool green tones, and the attenuated proportions of the figures make this artwork shine. The icon was painted on wooden panel with cross-bracing to avoid cracks or movement and the panel was prepared carefully with gesso and painted with acrylic. As usual, finished with varnish and polished with beeswax. A very special story for a very special icon and a great way to celebrate the magic of the Orthodox iconography of Eastern Europe trying to give a glimpse of beautiful antique-style reproduction.
