The icon presented was painted using acrylic paint in a classic style: the wooden boards have been meticulously prepared with gesso to provide a good base for the artwork.

The inspiration for my work was a 15th Century Russian icon and I decided to paint in a very similar style to the Old Master painter, aiming not for a perfect glossy finish but a more antique look to give my icons a timeless character. Like the Old Master, I have reinforced the back of the icon with cross-bracing to avoid cracking of the wooden panel or movement.

To protect the artwork from damage, all my icons on wood have been protected with high quality varnish and polished with beeswax.
