Hand-painted on glass
 
This is a classic icon on glass, created using a traditional painting technique common in Romania and most other orthodox Eastern European countries: reverse composition on glass - a technique used especially in the villages of Transylvania/Romania.
 
The design template (Izvod) and subject of the original icon was likely painted on wood in the Byzantine era and copied and reproduced in many styles over the centuries.
 
I chose to adapt the colour palette and the design in keeping with the time-honoured glass iconography technique.
 
The icon was painted with acrylic and oil and the back is protected using fine old recycled wood.
