Archangel Michael, the Great Taxiarch , 2022
28.5 x 23 x 4 cm (h x w x d)
Hand-painted on wood panel
Inspiration: an old Greek icon on wood panel probably 1350-1360, the original of which is in the Byzantine Museum, Athens. The original icon was probably part of a Deesis composition on an altar screen. The name Great Taxiarch draws attention to the archangel’s senior rank in the celestial army. The cryptogram in the sphere held by the archangel is interpreted as “Christ the Righteous Judge”. The original painting is typical of Byzantine painting in the 1360s. The icon was painted on Parana pine panel wood, carefully prepared with gesso and painted with acrylic, finished with varnish and polished with beeswax.
The painted icon was fixed in a separate frame made from recycled wood.
